Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Girlfriend's Purse

Have you ever held someone else's purse and wondered what the heck they have in it? It's bulky, uncomfortable, and seemingly too heavy to carry all day. But she seems to not mind, it's part of her daily routine. It's life! My point, never covet someone else's purse, you never know what kind of burden it actually is.

What's in your bag?

As described in the last post, women carry around a lot of baggage. We can sometimes spend hours looking in one bag! Have you ever lost your keys only to find them in your purse? So, it's time to take inventory!

Here's an exercise to help you along your way to a more healthful journey. Make a list of all of the things you are chiefly responsible for. Then, make a list of things that just seem to fall in your lap. Then, make a list of all of the things that you just can't help yourself in taking care of. Then, cross some of the crap off of your lists. What causes you stress and worry? What eats away time? What can be delegated to someone else? What is not important and unnecessary?

Try it! I guarantee you will find that you can lighten your load in no time flat!

Next week, we will start focusing on specific health related items: water intake, exercise, stress, nutrition, etc. If you have any suggestions or questions, please let us know.

Why BAG Lady?

Are you wondering why we decided to name our blog, The BAG Lady Notebook? It has nothing to do with handbags or fashion. However, we thought it to be perfect as women, we carry a lot of different bags. How many do you have? Let's count them: 1. Purse, 2. Backpack or briefcase, 3. Grocery bags, 4. Bag for volunteering/boards or commissions, 5. Diaper bag/Mommie bag, 6. Bag of naughties/Wifey bag...and the list goes on. For whatever the bag is designated, the imagery shows us for how much we are responsible.

We forget to often that we have to take care of ourselves even if only it is so that we can take care of the world. Work, home, family, community are all important, but stop and ask yourself, "Are they better off with you or without you?" My guess is that they need you!

So, take some time to consider your own health and happiness. Lighten up your load to focus on what is important. But also, show yourself as the precious stone you are. Be A Gem! When you shed that shell, you can reveal the pearl inside. When you shine up that rock, your diamond will sparkle!
The Erykah Badu song says it all (select lyrics listed):

“Bag lady, you gone hurt your back
Dragging all them bags like that
I guess nobody ever told you
All you must hold on to
Is you, is you, is you

One day all them bags gone get in your way
One day all them bags gone get in your way
I said one day all them bags gone get in your way
One day all them bags gone get in your way

So, pack light
Pack light
Pack light
Ooh ooh

Bag lady you gone miss your bus
You can’t hurry up
Cause you got too much stuff…

So, pack light
Pack light
Pack light
Ooh ooh

Girl  I know sometimes it’s hard
And we can’t let go…

So oh, oh, oh
If you start breathin
Then you won’t believe it
You’ll feel so much better
(so much better baby)

Bag lady
Let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go
Ooh, ooh
Girl you don’t need it…

Bag lady, hmm
Let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go
Ooh, ooh
Girl you don’t need that, hmm”

Don't be a regular old bag lady, weighed down and dragging along. Be A Gem, precious and sparkly!

Welcome to the BAG Lady Notebook

Welcome! Welcome! Welcome to the BAG Lady Notebook. For sometime, friends and supporters of the Rosa M. Douglas Scholarship Foundation has asked for information, guidance, and ideas on how to best get started or stay focused on a healthier lifestyle. We started sending out emails and text messages which led to "THE LIST" on our Facebook page. It has been great sharing information between and among regular women about their wellness concerns.

Our hope for this blog is that it will be a bit different than most wellness or healthy living blogs. Instead of commandments and directives, we want it to be more interactive among its members. We believe that sharing our goals, failures and triumphs will only inspire others on their journey. We will disseminate tips and information, but we would also like to answer questions you may have. We will have guest bloggers, including professionals in the health field as well as those on the journey. We look forward to our open discussion. Take this time for yourself...your life depends on it!
